Stuffed Animal Rescue Dogs
2016
Typically, the Oklahoma City Police Department and the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department use dogs to track criminals and locate missing persons. In the rescue and recovery efforts after the Oklahoma City bombing, dogs were used to search the rubble for survivors. FEMA USAR teams also brought dogs, and the local volunteer organization Oklahoma Rescue Dogs also provided services.
These stuffed animals recall the importance of canine assistance during the rescue efforts. Several dogs appeared in news stories during rescue and recovery for their efforts in the search and rescue and for the comfort they provided other first responders. These dogs are reported to have had a keen emotional awareness of the situation, showing signs of grief and sadness at the desolation they were encountering.
