Why would investigators cast tire tracks?

This plaster cast was collected from an indentation left by a tire at Geary Lake – south of Junction City, Kansas, where investigators determined the bomb was built. FBI Laboratory analysis showed the cast matched the tire tread on Terry Nichols’s car. You can see FBI identification information on the back of the cast.
