A primary feature of the Fence is that items are generally left anonymously, and often without a clear indication of why they were left. However, sometimes a person leaves an item with a clear message.
This University of Maryland pin was left on the Fence by Judy Tartar, a classmate of Alan G. Whicher at High Point High School in Maryland, who stayed connected with Alan after graduation. It is normal to consider the waves of grief that permeated Oklahoma City after the bombing; however, the Murrah Building was home to federal employees who came from all over the country. Items like this remind us that the effects of violence reach across time, space and generations.
