Rockette Doll With a Note
2008
While the Field of Empty Chairs provides a space for solemn interactions with the memory of a specific victim, the Fence allows visitors to leave more general messages of hope, and to do so in a way that leaves a piece of themselves. For example, an NBA team might leave a signed jersey.
This doll from 2008 was left by the Radio City Rockettes, who, after visiting the Museum, wanted to leave a piece of themselves at the Fence. Heartfelt gifts like this remind us of the importance of spaces of memorialization.
