The Oklahoma City bombing left Oklahomans and all Americans heartbroken, confused and reeling. Support poured in from all over the country. New York was one of the places that sent firefighters and other emergency responders to help in the search and rescue efforts.

The terrorist attacks on September 11 were yet another reminder of the effects of hate and violence. Destruction on a massive scale, these attacks killed almost 3,000 people, including nine first responders who were in Oklahoma City assisting with the rescue efforts six years earlier.

Oklahoma City’s connection to New York runs deep, bonded by shared experience, just as a New York Times ad produced by the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum says poignantly: “You stood with us in our darkest hour. Now, we stand with you.”
