1997

Signed items from families, work groups and schools are frequently left on the Fence. This tapestry, left and signed by students at Hyde Park Elementary in Vermont, is one such item. This is a particularly early example of this type of item, left nearly two years after the bombing. In March of 1997, when this tapestry was left, the Memorial had not been built, and the purpose of the Fence was to guard the site of the bombing, where the Memorial would eventually come to stand.

Since then, school field trips to the Museum have become a way to educate younger generations about the Oklahoma City bombing. Classes can take museum tours, hear first-hand accounts from survivors, family members of victims and first responders, and take part in student-centered learning in the Museum’s state-of-the-art STEM lab.
