2008

Sometimes dedicated to a victim and sometimes just a general outpouring of support and comfort, toys are a common item on the Fence. They remind us of the 19 children who died in the bombing as well as the comfort offered by children in the bombing’s aftermath.

Pinwheels, like those pictured, encapsulate and represent that feeling of comfort. They also promote an idea of transformation and healing. The wind continues to spin and change the wheel, just as those affected continue to process and heal from this tragedy. These pinwheels dedicated to the children not only offer a symbolic glimpse of childhood playfulness, but also stand tall as the symbols of campaigns to prevent child abuse. They encourage us to honor and cherish their memory.
