Workshop for Educators

This workshop is focused on how traumatic events in a child’s life can influence the educational process. This session includes information on how trauma affects an individual’s brain, emotions, and behavioral interactions. Although working with students who have experienced trauma can be challenging, there is hope through resilient relationships in school. In addition, the workshop will include information on the importance of professional self-care and maintaining healthy boundaries.

Sharon Heatly, Kristin Atchley, and Lori Hollingsworth work for Norman Public Schools. Sharon is the Director of Guidance and Counseling while Kristin and Lori are Student Advocacy Coordinators at the two high schools. Norman Public Schools implemented the Student Advocacy program three years ago, and they have added two more Middle School Coordinators through a Victims of Crime grant. With this unique program, the Student Advocacy Coordinators focus on the importance of supporting students who have experienced bullying, harassment, sexual assault, and other types of trauma.

  • Self-Care for Helping Professionals which include School Counselors and others in a school setting
