Tibetan Prayer Flags

2007

Many faith traditions are represented on the Memorial Fence. These Tibetan prayer flags are smaller versions of “Wind Horse” flags, often hung on temples, monasteries and through mountain passes. Prayer flags are used to promote peace and compassion, as the prayers they symbolize are carried by the wind to spread compassion and blessing to the surrounding space. Their inclusion here on the Fence reminds us of the ways compassion prevailed in the days, weeks and years after the bombing, and how space is made sacred through kindness, compassion and memorialization.
