Items Honoring Victims

Items Honoring Victims

One can tell from a cursory glance that the Fence holds many items that one would consider random. However, these items often surround things that were left with the specific purpose of remembering and honoring those who were killed.

In addition to the many photos and notes left on behalf of victims, there are also items that may be more surprising: birthday cards, items that speak to a particular victim’s hobby or mementos of a person’s school alma mater. These items help us remember the victims in their full humanity; more than names and faces, they are people with histories, families, hobbies and friendships. Along with the Field of Empty Chairs, items like this left on the Fence help us to never forget those who were lost, and to continue sharing their stories with all who visit the Memorial.

Not all victims can be represented in this space; viewers are encouraged to visit our webpage honoring those who were killed, and to visit the Memorial Museum’s Gallery of Honor.
