“To the courageous and caring who responded from near and far, we offer our eternal gratitude …” These words are inscribed around the Survivor Tree in the Outdoor Symbolic Memorial. They face out towards the Rescuers’ Orchard, where first responders are symbolized and honored by flower-bearing trees that protect the Survivor Tree. The way the Oklahoma City bombing became a story of hope and community began with first responders. In addition to virtually every police, fire and paramedic in the state who reported to help however they could, agencies poured in from all over the country. The work of the first responders and the hospitality shown to those who came to help from outside the state laid the groundwork for what would become the Oklahoma Standard.
Before there was a Rescuers’ Orchard, items were left on the Fence to honor these heroes. After the Memorial was constructed, items have continued to pour in.
